Mesopotamia Station

Mesopotamia Station high country farm is a small unspoiled piece
of South Island paradise which lies between the Rangitata and Forest
Creek rivers The owners offer quiet secluded basic but comfortable
accommodation equipped with the basics needed by fishing, hunting,
tramping and 4WD parties.
For anglers, the Rangitata River and its tributaries
provide excellent fishing for salmon and trout and there is access
to remote Bush Stream.
Mesopotamia Station is a family-run and traditionally
farmed, working sheep, deer and cattle farm. Its size is just over
72,000 acres and currently has 11,000 merino sheep, 2,200 deer and
500 cattle.

It is located in the high-country at the headwaters
of the Rangitata gorge at about 457 metres (1800 ft) above sea level
rising to 2660 metres (7500 ft).
Nearest city: Christchurch: 2.5hrs by car

| Getting there |
Drive
Drive up the Rangitata gorge road, maybe stopping
to picnic and the Te Wanahu flats at Peel Forest, or be catered
for at the Peel Forest store (last stop for fuel, supplies and alcohol).
Four wheel drive
Travel by 4WD vehicle with 4x4 New Zealand based
in nearby Geraldine, who can take you directly to Mesopotamia or
can incorporate it into one of their tours. Bookings can be arranged.
Fly
For those who want to fly in, all planes and
helicopter are welcome. The airstrip is a flat grass strip 1km in
length with tie-down spots. Gas is available if pre-arranged.

Mesopotamia or let your hosts organise your guided fishing day.

one of our remote tarns on the Station with a picnic hamper and
fish in splendid isolation.

Guests are welcome to join the farm workers and sample life on
a high country station in their time out from fishing or hunting.
- Heli-tours
The station has its own Hughes 500 helicopter perfect for the
birds’ eye view of the breath-taking scenery. Get aerial
views of where they filmed the Edoras scenes from the Lord of
the Rings or get dropped off up in the valley and hike home.
- Hiking
Plan a multi-day trip into some of New Zealand’s most spectacular
and remote country and stay in one of our back-country mustering
huts.
- Mountain-biking
Ride up the wide Rangitata river valley to the back-country huts
in a day or plan an adventure into the heart of the South Island.
