Fishing waters

Waioeka River

Location

Fighting Trout Lodge is marked on the Waioeka River map. It is 14 kms (10 minutes drive) from Opotiki.

Flying time from Auckland to Whakatane airport is 50 minutes, then a 50 minute drive.

Driving time from Auckland is 4-5 hours.

Accommodation

The self-contained cottage provides:

  • Master bedroom with a comfortable queen size bed and high quality linens
  • Second bedroom with two king size single beds and high quality linens
  • Open plan design lounge, kitchen and dining areas
  • Bathroom facilities of a high standard (hairdryer included)
  • Laundry facilities, iron and ironing board
  • Fully equipped kitchen with outside barbecue.
Restrictions
  • No firearms or animals are permitted in order to protect the livestock on this 40 acre beef cattle farm.
  • Smoking is permitted but only outside the cottage and away from non smokers.
Local facilities

A ten minute drive away in Opotoki you will find:

  • Restaurants
  • New World grocery story open 7 days between 9am and 7pm (longer hours on some days)
  • Hickeys Sport store which sells trout licenses and flies (owner Tim Hickey). The hours are Mon-Fri: 8.00am-5.30pm; Sat: 8.00am-2.00pm; Sun: 10.00am-2.00pm.

Indicative tariff

The Fighting Trout Lodge's tariff are:

  • NZ$120 for two people for one night
  • NZ$99 for two people per night for two nights or more
  • NZ$599 for two people for one week
  • NZ$25 for additional people per night

Breakfast

A continental breakfast is available upon request for NZ$15 per person, minimum of two people.

 

Fishing equipment hire

Fly fishing rod, reel, line, net and chest waders are available for rent. The fee is NZ$50.00 per complete set. You will need to supply your own licence, flies and trace (leader).

 

Horse back riding

Rides are for an hour or two hours at NZ$25.00 per hour per person, with a two person minimum.

Prices are in New Zealand dollars and include GST (12.5% Goods and Services Tax).

Bookings

Please phone or email to make a reservation. To avoid disappointment, book well in advance.

A 50% deposit is required for the cottage stay. Please send deposits to their postal address. The balance is payable upon arrival by cash or cheque. Credit cards are not accepted.

Deposits are non refundable and if you stay for fewer nights than you booked you will be charged for the full booking.

Directions Take State Highway 2 out of Opotiki heading south to Gisborne. After about 10km you will enter the Waioeka Gorge which has some very sharp bends. After another 4 kms look on the river side for the gold signs with black lettering saying “New Zealand's Best Spot” .
