Motu Fishing / Hazelwood Homestead

 

Hazelwood is a remote rural retreat and fishing and hunting destination near the Motu River where you can relax and enjoy old country hospitality with the benefit of an experienced fishing guide on site.

Your guide will take you fishing on the tranquil and remote waters of the Motu River and hidden trout streams nearby. Then return to the homestead where you'll find stylish accommodation and fine food.

Fishing waters The Motu River, which is within walking distance, is one of New Zealand's best dry fly fishing rivers, and probably the best brown trout fishery in the North Island.
Location

Hazelwood is marked on the upper Motu River map.

A typical day
  • Start the day with a cooked or continental breakfast and pick up a packed lunch for the fishermen
  • After a days fishing come back to relaxed atmosphere of Hazelwood, a homestead registered with the Historic Places Trust and built in 1908 for Winston's grandfather.
  • Sit on the balcony with a drink as the shadows lengthen across the tennis court or argue amiably over a game of petanque down by the creek.
  • Enjoy a three course meal of all things New Zealand served in the dining room looking out onto the informal park like gardens.
  • Take a break from fishing and soothe the soul with a walk to Kotare Stations Back River Hut and take in the high peaks, stunning native bush and crystal clear mountain streams
  • Take a gentle walk along the Winray Track to view the Motu Falls.
Accommodation

There are three guest rooms:

  • Blue Room: Queen bed with private bathroom
  • Red Room: Double bed with private bathroom
  • Yellow Room: Twin king beds with private bathroom

Each private bathroom has a shower, toilet and vanity.

Other facilities include:

  • Sitting room with open fire
  • Sunroom with garden outlook
  • Continental or cooked breakfast
  • Lunch and dinner by arrangement

Guiding

The daily guiding fee includes lunch. Transport to remote areas may be extra.

  • $300 per day for 1 person
  • $500 per day for 2 people
  • Overnight trips staying at an outback cabin: please enquire.

Bed and breakfast

Hazelwood's bed and breakfast tariffs for a two night minimum stay are:

  • NZ$135 per night: Double
  • NZ$95 per night : Single

Other meals

Lunch and dinner are available by arrangement.

  • Lunch:
    - Free on guided fishing trips
    - Otherwise NZ$15-20 per person
  • Dinner: NZ$40 per person (wine included)
