Wairata Station

Wairata Station is an angler's playground with good natural stocks of feisty rainbow trout and stealth-like brown trout to challenge you in the Waioeka River that runs through and the Opato Stream that borders the farm.

Wairata Station provides cottage and chalet accommodation, campervan parking, hosts who are keen anglers, access to some great fishing, and a fishing guide if required.

Waioeka River

Opato Stream

Location

Wairata Station is marked on the Waioeka River map.

It is located between Opotiki and Matawai 2km off SH2

The fishing
  • Running through or bordering Wairata Station are at least 14 kilometres of the Waioeka River and the Opato Stream
  • These waters are typically open from October to the end of June 30
  • An angler's playground with good natural stocks of feisty rainbow trout and stealth-like brown trout to challenge you
  • The average size is 3-5lbs although trout up to 10lbs have been caught.
  • These fish are good fighters, albeit briefly and they strike hard so a reasonably robust tippet is required (4-6lbs).
  • Most trout are taken on a nymph or a dry fly, if you're lucky enough to strike a good evening rise right on dark
  • If you're lucky, Mary may tie you a 'Wairata Special' to try your luck!
  • Guided trout fishing is available

The bush-bach sleeps up to six in one bedroom:

Campervan parking If you're traveling by campervan, Wairata Station offers you a place to stop and stay in truly rural suroundings.

  • Guided trout fishing: $150 per person

Directions

Wairata Station is 2km down Wairata Road which runs off SH2 between Opotiki and Matawai.

  • Turn off SH2 at the signpost to Wairata Road.
  • Cross the bridge
  • Follow the track until you see, on the left, the white gate and the "Farm Stays" sign.
