Glenthorne Station

Glenthorne Station is nestled on the shores of Lake Coleridge amid superb mountain scenery, in a high country area renowned for its salmon and trout fishing, There are some small lakes and rivers on Glenthorne Station that are also available for fishing.

The choice of accommodation at Glenthorne Station includes self-catering lodge at Lower and Upper Glenthorne, and a holiday house situated at the head of the lake.

Rakaia high country lakes including Lake Ida, Little Ida, Lake Catherine (Lake Monck), Lake Evelyn, Lake Selfe and Lake Henrietta.

Location

Glenthorne Station (previously known as Ryton Station) is marked on the Lake Coleridge map and the upper Rakaia River map and the upper Waimakariri River map.

Glenthrone Station is on the north side of Lake Coleridge. The homestead is only 1.5 hours drive from Christchurch city and international airport. Good roads provide access all year round.

Note that you need your own transport and the nearest shops and petrol outlets are one hour away in Methven or Darfield. There is no cell phone coverage on Glenthorne Station but there is limited coverage on the Coleridge Road.

Setting Glenthorne Station is located at the foot of the spectacular Southern Alps in a natural, peaceful, environment with fantastic surrounding scenery. It is a land of rugged mountains, braided rivers, opalscent lakes, and scenery with few equals. It is also the home to the country's largest sheep stations and steeped in New Zealand history.

Lower Glenthorne Lodge

Glenthorne Lodge sleeps as many as 12 people in modern, clean, warm accommodation (and up to 17 using two adjoining ensuite bedrooms).

Guests have their own bedroom and share kitchen and bathroom facilities

  • Bring your own bed linen (only pillows are provided) or bedding can be supplied at an additional charge on request
  • There are five carpeted bedrooms, with a combination of single beds and/or double beds
  • In addition, there are two ensuite bedrooms that adjoin the lodge, one with a queen bed and the other with a queen and a single bed
  • Suitable for families or groups. If your group is big enough to full the lodge you may have the whole lodge to yourself
  • The large shared cooking and living area is equipped with a refrigerator, microwave, two ovens, a laundry, drying room and television
  • The lodge is kept warm with electric heating
  • Available all year round
  • Bookings are necessary
Upper Glenthorne Lodge

The Upper Lodge sleeps as many as 19 people with extra mattresses available.

  • Guests have their own bedroom and share kitchen and bathroom facilities
  • Bring your own bed linen (only pillows are provided) or bedding can be supplied on request
  • There are six shared bedrooms
  • Bathroom area has 2 showers, 2 toilets and 3 hand basins
  • Suitable for families or groups. If your group is big enough to full the lodge you may have the whole lodge to yourself
  • The large shared cooking and living area is equipped with a refrigerator, microwave, two ovens, a laundry, drying room and television
  • The lodge is kept warm with electric heating
  • Available all year round
  • Bookings are necessary
Holiday house

The fully-furnished warm, clean and comfortable self-catering holiday house can be rented

  • Pillows are provided but other bedding is required, or can be supplied on request.
  • Located 12km from the Lower Glenthorne homestead, nestled in a mature setting at the head of Lake Coleridge, surrounded by mountains and South Island high country
  • Rakaia house has a living room and a fully equipped kitchen with a microwave and fridge-freezer
  • No television reception available or telephone, but a phone is available in a private home for emergencies

Rakaia House

Rakaia House has five bedrooms and can sleep 11 people. It has two showers and two toilets

  • One room with a double and a single bed
  • Three rooms with a bunk bed in each
  • The fifth room has two single beds
The Retreat

The Retreat is accessible by 4WD vehicle only in a secluded haven nestled amongst the mountains in the Avoca Valley. It has most of the comforts of home amidst beautiful scenery and tranquil surroundings for your to relax and enjoy. Take a short walk to nearby Lake Lillian or cross the river to visit the pinnacles an unusual geological formation.

The Retreat originally established by the New Zealand Forest Service to accommodate deer cullers and scientists, was taken over by Glenthorne in 1998. Following renovations it now provides a comfortable refuge for families and groups who appreciate the peace and solitude of the area.

  • Sleeps between 18 – 22 people
  • 3 bedrooms in main building with 2 more buildings situated outside
  • Permanently fitted gas for all hot water, cooking and some lighting
  • Log burner and wood supplied
  • Fully equipped for self catering
  • No fridge/freezer but a food safe for storage of food
  • 2 showers and 2 toilets
  • Bring own bedding, towels, toiletry items and food
  • Pillows and cases are provided

The Retreat comprises of one large lounge/dining room with a log burner and an open plan kitchen. This room also has two fold our settee couches for extra beds if required and two large kitchen tables for dining

    The Mt Olympus ski field access tow is only half an hour from Glenthorne Station and transport can be provided. Mt Hutt and Porter Heights ski fields are both less than 60 minutes away

Lower Glenthorne Lodge

  • Own bedding and self-catering:
    NZ$35-$45 per person per night
  • Bedding and linen hire:
    NZ$20 extra per person
  • Lodge ensuite room:
    $90-$110 per room per night

Upper Glenthorne Lodge

  • Own bedding and self-catering:
    NZ$25 per person per night
  • Bedding and linen hire:
    NZ$20 extra per person

Rakaia Holiday house

  • Own bedding and self-catering:
    $100 per night per house (for 1-2 people)
  • Each extra person: $25 each
    (maximum of $250 per night)
  • Bedding and linen hire: $20 per person

The Retreat

  • $25 per person per night (own bedding & towels)
  • Conditions: A minimum amount of $75 per night is required to book the retreat. No matter what size group you have you would have exclusive use of this building

Please note that because it is a sheep station, it is not possible for you to bring pets to Glenthorne Station

Directions Follow the Glenthorne signposts from either SH72 at Windwhistle or SH73 at Lake Lyndon for approximately half an hour. Glenthorne Station is about 10 minutes drive from the start of Harper Road.
