Setting

Lake Rotoroa Lodge lies along a quiet country lane that winds its way through the Gowan River valley. It is nestled at the northern tip of New Zealand's spectacular Southern Alps surrounded by the forests of the Nelson Lakes National Park. Lake Rotoroa is considered the jewel in the crown of the park: its tranquil waters reflect a magnificent vista of snow-capped mountains and lush native bush.

Accommodation features

Lake Rotoroa Lodge is a two-storey 1920s country house that has been lovingly restored. It offers:

  • Ten individual guest rooms, with en-suite bathrooms with under floor heating, and brass beds replete with feather quilts.
  • A welcoming sitting room and bar with a large picture window that frames a stunning view of the lake and the dramatic mountain peaks of the Travers Range
  • Chefs who delight in designing and preparing meals for small numbers of discerning guests.
  • An elegant dining room which also has superb lake views where fine dinners are enjoyed, complemented by wines from the region's world-renowned vineyards.
  • Beautifully served breakfasts also served in the dining room
  • Lunch served in the bar or a gourmet picnic for those who venture away from the lodge for the day
  • Some eccentricities in the décor, artworks, fixtures and fittings which add to the lodge's charm and comfort. These include an eclectic mix of objets d'art, paintings, stag trophies from the lodge's early days and, of course, the occasional trout, in the entrance hall.
Your guide

Lake Rotoroa Lodge provides only experienced guides with very keen eyes and great local knowledge. A guide is vital, no matter how accomplished you are, to make the most of the finest trout fishing in the world.

Lake Rotoroa guides understand that not everyone has the same fishing skills or wants to walk at a fast pace. They are skilled not only at teaching, but at tailoring each individual day to suit the many and varied requirements of guests.

Lake Rotoroa Lodge guides are recognised internationally as some of the best available.

Guided fishing

On a typical day, your guide will drive you to the river of the day where you can fish during daylight hours (so the fish can be spotted). The drive to the river may be anywhere from ten minutes to an hour and a quarter.

Your guide will often implement a cunning plan involving a bicycle so you don't have to walk back to where you started fishing at the end of the day.

On your return home to the lodge, the bar and a drink with your guide await you before dinner.

The Lodge has a helicopter based on site to maximise wilderness fishing opportunities. It is useful to advise before your arrival if you want to fly during your stay, as it can help your guide plan your time together.

Fishing equipment

You're very welcome to bring your own, but to avoid the necessity to carry fishing gear with you, Lake Rotoroa Lodge provides all the equipment you'll need including:

  • Men's and women's waders
  • Wading boots of all shapes and sizes, clean and in very good condition
  • Over 40 rods in brands such as Thomas & Thomas, Sage, Loop and Hardy (5 & 6 weights)
  • Wading sticks

You need only bring a rain jacket for inclement weather and polarised glasses.
