Description

Purpose built in 1990 in French provincial style to accommodate just 12 guests, the lodge is designed to harmonize with the surrounding countryside. Its sunlit verandas, large comfortable lounge, huge open fireplaces and spacious country kitchen offer guests relaxation in style and comfort.

The driveway takes you past the vineyard which produces chardonnay grapes which our wine maker Christian Le Gros lovingly turns into superb oak aged chardonnay.

Your hosts have created a peaceful haven in this beautiful valley and will personally ensure that your stay at Motueka River Lodge will be a memorable one.

  • A kitchen with an antique Irish prep table, woodburner, benches overflow with bowls of fresh fruit, pantry filled with homemade preserves and stores and views of deer grazing against a forest backdrop.
  • Six bedrooms finished in a cob-like sand cement with private bathrooms and wonderful views of the valley.

About your guides

All Motueka River Lodge fishing guides are local people who know their territory well. They are extremely patient and willing to share their knowledge and teach, so don’t worry if you consider yourself a novice, their guides will provide you with a positive angling experience.

Guiding from the Motueka River Lodge specializes in the Motueka River System and its many tributaries, plus the Riwaka.
For longer stay guest we also offer other Rivers such as the Pelorus and Buller River systems.
Our guides also hold a recreational permit for the upper Wairau which customers value highly. Concessions are also held for all back country areas in which there are numerous Heli options for the adventurous!

Fly fishing gear

As most of the fishing is for brown trout, often in waters of unusual clarity, the Lodge recommends:

  • Rods handling weight 5-7 lines in dull tones (brightly coloured or fluorescent lines are not advised).
  • Flies and nymphs in smaller sizes, though some weighted nymphs should be carried. Your guides are fully equipped if in doubt.
  • Lightweight waders or wading shoes are a must as wading wet is part of the experience.
  • Clothing in prominent green and brown tones of the environment is essential for a stealthy approach.
  • Lures such as the veltic, mepps or toby range if you'd like to spin fish at dawn and dusk, or following a fresh.
Other activities in the area
