Fly fishing gear

What to bring

Owen River Lodge recommends bringing:

  • Fly rods in 5 and 7 weight
  • Fly reels to suit your rod with at least 50 metres of backing
  • Most anglers use a weight forward, floating fly line, dull in colour with green being ideal
  • Long leaders: 12-14 feet is the norm
  • 3, 4 and 6 pound tippets
  • Dry flies: Parachute Adams, Royal Wulff and Cicadas
Nymphs: Hare and Copper, Pheasant Tail, and some small tungsten bead heads
Note: If you are coming from overseas, get your flies in New Zealand to avoid hassle at Customs.
  • Fishing vest with floatant, clippers, and forceps
  • Spiked wading boots
  • For early and late season fishing, lightweight waders.
In the warmer months just a pair of lightweight nylon shorts over polypropylene or New Zealand merino wool underwear bottoms and your boots is all you need.
  • Good quality polarised sun or prescription glasses
  • Woollen socks, wide brimmed hat or baseball cap, windproof pullover/fleece and a good quality hooded rain jacket in a dull colour.
