Location

Riverrun Lodge is marked on the upper Clutha River map. It is a 5-6 minutes drive from Wanaka township.

Setting

Riverrun Lodge is set on an escarpment on a 500 acre riverside property which borders New Zealand’s largest river, the Clutha. It is the edge of one of New Zealand’s largest wilderness regions, Mt Aspiring National Park, with walks and running trails, and spectacular and uninterrupted mountain views of the the Southern Alps.

Accommodation

Designed by a leading local architect using recycled local materials and handcrafted furniture, the living areas and accommodation have a sense of warmth, intimacy and permanancy as well as excellent facilities.

The rooms

Guest accommodation at Riverrun lodge is uncluttered, spacious, comfortable and relaxing, with carefully chosen touches of luxury. Riverrun's accommodation offers the following:

  • Clutha rooms have super-king or twin beds and video as well as tv
  • Cardrona rooms have queen size beds, opening directly onto a veranda
  • All rooms are luxuriously equipped with fine linen, wool duvets, feather throws, fluffy towels and robes as well as satellite tv or tv/video, phone and clock/radio
  • Every room has an unobstructed view of New Zealand's Southern Alps
  • All rooms have sumptuous bathrooms with heated towel rails, toiletries and hairdryer
  • Magazines, books, chocolates, fresh fruit, nuts and complimentary refreshments ensure guests feel both indulged and at home
Food and wine

Breakfast

A sumptuous breakfast is provided for all guests at Riverrun, which includes:

  • Wanaka roasted coffee, tea and herbal teas, a buffet of local preserves, fresh orchard fruits and fruit juices, home-made muesli and other cereals, hand crafted breads
  • A selection from the lengthy breakfast menu that ranges from decadent to fresh and piquant
  • Relaxed hours, guests may breakfast anywhere between 7.30am and 10.30am

Dinner

Dinner at Riverrun Lodge is a memorable experience where guests can indulge in superb food, sample fine regional wines and enjoy professional service in a relaxed atmosphere.

  • Menus include tender Cervena venison, New Zealand lamb, duck, terakihi, clams, salmon; enhanced with locally grown herbs, olive oils and verjus
  • The chef is happy to smoke your catch from the day's fishing
  • A selection of the best New Zealand cheeses always features in Riverrun's menus or on a cheeseboard
  • Menus change frequently to reflect what is most in season
  • The area is renowned for stonefruit (plums, apricots, cherries and nectarines) and these are used whereever possible in season
  • Special dietary requirements can be catered for but should be discussed with the lodge in advance
  • Advance reservations for dinner at the lodge are much appreciated

Wine

Riverrun is located in one of New Zealand's premier wine region and provides an excellent selection of wines for guests. Riverrun has:

  • A policy to stock an ever expanding list of superb local wines
  • A wine list specialises in local Central Otago Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir
  • Hosts who are happy to devise individual wine tours for guests wishing to visit the vineyards and meet the wine makers
Guided fishing options

Guided flyfishing

  • For fly fishers, Riverrun coordinates private full day guided trips by 4WD or helicopter
  • Riverrun has four experienced and professional guides, who should be booked as far ahead as possible
  • Equipment can be provided
  • The rivers accessed range from forested alpine rivers in the mountains to the west to small streams and hidden valleys in the drier country further east
  • On the Clutha river, which is a high volume river, a good option is fly fishing from a raft that will give you easy access to the most fishable sections
  • Moderate fitness is advisable

Lake fishing

  • If you prefer trolling or spinning, you may choose to charter a boat and guide on Lake Wanaka, combining fishing with exploring the lake, islands and and river deltas
  • Guided charters can be from two hours to full day in duration
  • Lake Wanaka is New Zealand’s fourth largest lake and has four islands, three of which you can land on
  • It is heavily populated with brown and rainbow trout and the lake fishing is generally excellent
  • Basic fitness advisable

Riverrun Lodge's tariff includes accommodation, breakfast,
(buffet and delicious menu selection) for two people,
evening appetisers, complimentary non-alcoholic
drinks and full use of lodge facilities.

  • Clutha rooms: NZ$525 per room per night
  • Cardrona rooms: NZ$345 per room per night
  • Reduced room rates are available for stays of 4 nights or longer and also over winter
  • Please enquire for single occupancy rates
  • Dinner: NZ$85 per person (available Monday to Saturday; advanced reservations appreciated)
  • A number of special packages are also available (for details, please see the Riverrun website)
Guided fly fishing:

Guided flyfishing

  • NZ$570 for a full day of guided fishing for one or two anglers

Lake fishing

  • NZ$100 per hour boat charter
  • Two hours minimum
Bookings

  • Reservations can be made with AMEX, VISA or MC credit cards
  • Reservations are not given final confirmation without credit card details
  • These details will only be used in the event of a cancellation fee
Cancellation policy

If you need to cancel, advise Riverrun Lodge as soon as possible as cancellations can significantly affect Riverrun because of it is a small lodge. When you make a reservation, you agree to the following cancellation policy:

  • Cancellations made less than 30 days in advance attract a charge of 30% of total booking,
  • Cancellations made less than 5 days in advance attract a 100% fee
Directions

Approaching Wanaka from Dunedin, the Lindis Pass/Mt Cook/Tekapo or from Queenstown via the Kawarau gorge:

  • After you pass the airport, drive 2-3 minutes further then turn right down Halliday Road. (The turn-off to the West Coast/Haast is a little further on.)
  • Drive to the very end of Halliday Road, turn in through the large stone gates, past the farm buildings and on up to the lodge set on the hillside.

Approaching from the West Coast:

  • As you approach Wanaka you come to a T intersection. Turn left onto SH6 (towards Cromwell and Queenstown).
  • Continue for 1-2 minutes and turn left again down Halliday Road.
  • Drive to the very end, turn in through the large stone gates, past the farm buildings and on up to the lodge set on the hillside.

Approaching from Wanaka (or Queenstown via the Crown Range Rd, SH 89, unsealed):

  • Take State Highway 6 out of town and continue past the turnoff to the West Coast and Haast (do not take this road).
  • 1-2 minutes after this junction you will find Halliday Rd on your left.
  • Drive to the very end, turn in through the large stone gates, past the farm buildings and on up to the lodge set on the hillside.
