Mainholm Lodge offers luxury 4.5 star accommodation and fine dining, perfect for unwinding as well as for access to the Mataura, the Pomahaka (which you can reach by walking along the farm track) and other great fishing rivers. Experienced local fishing guides can be arranged.

Mainholm has four large, character bedrooms, with stunning views. Guests can partake of fine dining, excellent local wines, boutique beers and great coffee.

Location

Mainholm Lodge is marked on the lower Mataura River map.

The rooms

The four large, character bedrooms are each individually decorated, with tall ceilings, original fireplaces and large windows typical of the late Victorian period.

  • The Chippendale Four Poster Suite comes complete with a king-size four poster bed and a beautiful roll-top bath plus ensuite.
  • The Returning Room featured in the file 'The Returning' has a kingsize bed and an ensuite.
  • The Victorian Room features a brass Victorian-style queen-size bed plus a single bed. The room has a wash basin/vanity unit.
  • The Edwardian Room which boasts a mahogany and ebony inlaid, genuine English Edwardian bed. The room has a wash basin/vanity unit.

All rooms have:
- Tea/coffee making facilities

- Bath robes and towels

- Hairdryers
- TV and DVD player
- Use of an extensive DVD library

Fine dining

Dining

  • Guests can enjoy fine dining each night. Sandi is your chef and Graham is your host.
  • Three dining rooms cater for guests, diners and groups
  • Classic food with fresh twists and modern interpretations, providing a range of courses guaranteed to whet your appetite.
  • Exceptional, home-cooked food using the best of local and Southland produce and the finest quality seasonal ingredients
  • Fresh vegetables and herbs from Mainholm's own gardens.
  • A la carte, set menus and banquets available. You can see sample menus at the Mainholm website.
  • Any special dietary needs and dining requirements are discussed with guests.

Wine and beer

  • The wine list showcases the best that New Zealand has to offer Local wineries and in particular, pinot noir from Alexandra in Central Otago, are specialties.
  • Mainholm stocks boutique beers from New Zealand and across the world. All are hand-selected by Graham and designed to complement your meal.
  • The house bar provides a wide range of spirits, cocktails, liquors and non-alcohol beverages.

Coffee

  • A wide variety of hot drinks are served at Mainholm, with coffee a speciality.
  • Graham is a trained Barista, serving Mainholm's own blend of locally roasted coffee.
Restaurant
  • The restaurant is open to casual diners on Friday and Saturday.
  • At other times a minimum of 10 adult diners is required.
  • Advance booking is essential.
Activities at Mainholm
  • Sauna a timber lined private room for two
  • Gardens where you can read on the sun warmed veranda or under a shaded elm tree.
  • DVD collection
  • River track walk
  • Croquet and petanque (equipment supplied)
  • Two pet cats Tibby and Milly, pet livestock and miniatire horses
  • Take part in shearing and stock rounding on neighbouring farms (seasonal and by arrangement).
  • Stroll along the nearby Pomahaka forestry river walk
  • Walk into the Blue Mountains
  • Mountain bike rides on challenging marked routes. Guests can hire a mountain bike from Mainholm.
Local attractions and activities
  • Hunting in the native bush gullies for deer and wild pig
  • Golf at Tapanui and Clinton  golf courses
  • Bush walking and native bird watching in the Blue Mountains including the rare Mohua (bush canary)
  • Visit the lighthouse and sea wildlife at Nugget Point

Room tariffs

Mainholm Lodge's room tariffs include a continental-style breakfast of home baked bread, selection of cereals and fruit salad:

- Chippendale 4 Poster Suite: $290 per room per night

- Returning Room: $250 per room per night

- Edwardian Room: $150 per room per night
- Victorian Room: $175 per room per night

A classic Kiwi breakfast is available at a small additional charge.

From $37 for 2 courses to $45 for full buffet dinner
