Anglers Retreat is a tranquil country retreat catering to the needs of the discerning angler. It is set in its own 20 acres, amidst some of New Zealand's most spectacular scenery.

Lake Taupo

Anglers Retreat is marked on the Lake Taupo map.

Location

Anglers Retreat is situated halfway between Taupo and Turangi townships, 4km off the Western Bays Highway (SH32), and located only minutes from the famous Waihaha River (stream). It is a pleasant 35 minute drive to Taupo or Turangi townships on good quiet sealed roads.

Setting

From its rural setting, the lodge overlooks Lake Taupo to the east and the mountains of Tongariro National Park to the south. To the west is Pureora Forest Park, and to the north rolling farmland.

A walking track leads from the lodge to the Waihaha stream mouth, lake edge and shore.

Guided fishing options

Anglers Retreat specialises in wilderness fishing and trophy trout, with helicopter access to get to more remote areas, where the scenery and fishing are superb.

Fishing options include day trips or multi-day camp-outs, usually in tents, occasionally in huts. Anglers Retreat provides all the necessary gear, including tents, sleeping bags and cooking gear.

Your safety and enjoyment are prime goals, so when fishing wilderness areas, guides carry personal mini sat- alert (EPIRB).

Fly fishing gear

At Anglers Retreat, you choose whether you choose if you would like gear provided on guide fishing trips.

If bringing your own fishing gear, Anglers Retreat recommends:

  • 5 to 7 weight rods for the summer months; 7 or 8 weight rods for winter fishing
  • Modern wide arbor reels such as Waterworks, Bauer, Lamson or Marryat to name a few.
  • Dull coloured (olive or grey) long belly profile, forward taper lines
  • Fluorocarbon leaders
  • In summer, felt-soled boots or gortex breathable waders
  • In winter, 5 or 7mm neoprene waders (or gortex waders over fleece wader trousers) plus polyprop long johns.

Attractions

Other attractions in the area include:

  • Hot pools just 20 minutes drive.
  • Near Tongariro National Park and Pureora Forest and Pureora Forest park for bush walks.
  • Adjacent to full working farms which give the opportunity to view farm animals and working dogs and on farm activities.
  • 5 golf courses within 35 minutes dirve.
  • Tongariro National Park ski field is less than an hours drive away.
  • Shopping, cafes and restaurants at Taupo (35 mins away) and Rotorua (1 hours drive).
Winter specials

Anglers Retreat offers the some special deals for the winter 2007 season that include full accommodation and guided fishing:

  • Share/twin: NZ$995 per person per night (excl. GST).
  • Single: $NZ965 per night (excl. GST)
  • Stay for four nights and enjoy the fifth night free.

The winter special includes:

  • Twin/double room with ensuite
  • Breakfast
  • Complimentary cocktail hour
  • A homestyle cooked, 3-course evening meal
  • Guided fishing with an experienced fishing guide
  • Drop off and pick up from Anglers Retreat
  • Picnic lunch and refreshments
  • All fishing gear as required, including breathable waders, rods and flies

The cost of fishing licences is not included.

Customised packages

Anglers Retreat can customise a package to suit your requirements, for example:
- accommodation only
- bed and breakfast
- accommodation and all meals
- guiding only

Wine can be purchased with dinner from Anglers Retreat's very good wine list.

Additional options

Anglers Retreat can also arrange:

  • Transfers from Taupo airport: $120 per taxi (35 mins drive); helicopter POA.
  • Transfers to/from railway at National Park $175

Guided fly fishing:

Rates for guided fly fishing start at NZ$625 per day plus licences, which includes modern 4x4 transport and a maximum of two anglers per guide.

Anglers Retreat can supply any necessary fishing gear at no extra cost:
- Sage or Composite rods
- Quality reels and lines
- Flies
- Neoprene waders for winter
- Quality sleeping bags and camping gear for over-nighters

Helicopter hire

Anglers Retreat can also arrange helicopter hire at a cost of $950 - $1450 depending on the location

Booking

Please book early to be sure of your preferred dates.

A 20% deposit is required to secure a booking. Full payment becomes due 30 days prior to commencement of the booking.

Mastercard and Visa are accepted.

Cancellation policy The deposit is fully refundable if the booking cancelled up to 60 days prior to commencement date. After 60 days, the deposit is refundable only if the booked time is resold. Clints are advised to carry travel insurance.
