Tongariro Lodge

Tongariro Lodge is one of the world's great fishing lodges. It is located in beautiful landscaped grounds on the banks of the legendary Tongariro River and provides the highest level of accommodation and service. The knowledgeable resident guides, with decades of guiding experience on over 40 rivers and 4 lakes in the vicinity, will ensure that you will have the angling adventure of a lifetime. Location

Tongariro Lodge is marked on the lower Tongariro River map.

It is located on the banks of the Tongariro River just north of Turangi and close to the southern shores of Lake Taupo.  Transfers to and from airports at Taupo, Rotorua, or Auckland can be arranged.

History

Since it was established in 1982 by legendary angler and guide Tony Hayes, a who's who of world fly fishing have stayed at Tongariro Lodge along with many celebrities such as President Jimmy Carter, Robert Mitchum, Liam Neeson, Larry Hagman, Timothy Dalton, Malcom Fraser.

It has featured in major fishing and travel publications in the USA, Australia, Europe and New Zealand including The New Yorker, Conde Naste Traveller, Gourmet Magazine, New York Times, Esquire, Forbes FYI, Fly Fisherman, Fly Rod and Reel, Wild On The Fly, Air New Zealand, Qantas, Cathay Pacific, United Airlines in-flight magazines.

The lodge has had major exposure on Australian, New Zealand and American prime time television, with shows such as Greg Norman's Clear Water Big Fish series, Rex Hunt Outdoor Show, Fly Fishing The World and ABC World of Sports.

Accommodation

The lodge provides guests accommodation in executive chalets that are separate from the main lodge. The chalets range from one to five bedrooms each with:

  • Their own secluded sunny terrace with views of the Tongariro River, Lake Taupo or the mountains
The restaurant

Tongariro Lodge has an international reputation and specialises in serving the best of New Zealand game and traditional foods accompanied by superb wine. The true atmosphere of the Lodge is best experienced in front of an open fire over a four course evening meal as the day's activities are recounted. - Beware however, stories get taller as the evening wears on.

Breakfast and luncheon are provided at your leisure. Hamper lunches are one of the specialities and great for those heading out for a day on the water.

Fishing options

The lodge is located in a vast fishery that can provide the trout fishing experience of a lifetime at any time of the year. There is great fishing for the beginner and expert alike. The options include:

River fishing

The world famous Tongariro River is just a short cast from your accommodation. As well there are numerous other rivers a short distance drive from the lodge which has four wheel drive vehicles that can get you to those special places safely and quickly.

Raft fishing

The lodge runs their own rafts that can take you through stunning scenerey to fish remote pools where the fish have seldom seen a fly allowing you to combine adventure with your fishing experience. In this way the lodge guides can put you onto some of the best back country nymph and dry fly fishing for sighted browns and rainbows.

Boat fishing on Lake Taupo

Lake Taupo is a short distance away and offers some of the best fishing to be found anywhere. Whether it be trolling or harling or using the boat to get to a remote sheltered bay to cast to trout that are chasing small bait fish into the shallows, the opportunities are endless.

Heli-fishing

A helicopter access options offers anglers the opportunity to access truly remarkable fishing in remote wilderness areas where you will not see another angler.

About your guides To make the most of the time you have in this fishing paradise we recommend that you make use of one of the resident guides each of whom have an average of over 20 years guiding experience. Through the knowledge they have bult up of the area, they can take you to many rivers that run through private land and are generally unaccessible. And every year the guides in their leisure time get out and explore more 'waters' for the lodge guests to enjoy.

Bookings are for a maximum of 2 anglers on rivers per guide or 4 anglers per boat:

  • NZ$304 per guide for a half day excluding GST

Cancellation policy

Reservations are confirmed by a 25% deposit on room and meals package and guided fishing.

If a reservation is cancelled:

  • Within 60 days prior to arrival a 25% cancellation fee applies
  • Within 30 days prior to arrival a 100% cancellation fee applies.
