The lodge is located within
walking distance of the world famous Tongariro River, which is noted
for its winter spawning runs of wild rainbow trout with an average
weight of approximately 2kgs or 4.5lb. The brown trout on average
will be larger with quite a few exceeding 10 lbs. Fishing options
include:
Summer fishing
Summer fishing is quite challenging, using lighter
rods and smaller nymphs and fishing for resident fish, it is sometimes
a test of one's skill and patience as it usually requires spotting
the fish first and then making the correct cast.
The scenery on these backcountry streams is great
and you may think that you are the only person in this world. Most
can be access by 4x4 vehicle. For the angler that wants a real adventure
a helicopter flight will get you in to the most remote rivers in
our area.
Winter fishing
This area is world renown for the winter runs
of rainbow & brown trout up the Tongariro River & other
smaller streams.
It is estimated that 50,000 - 70,000 trout run
up the Tongariro River every winter and these trout are in top condition
and will test your skills when trying to land them.
Fishing on Lake Taupo
There can be good trout fishing around the shores
of Lake Taupo in the summer time when the trout come into feed on
the smelt that are spawning in the shallower water. Trout can often
be seen aggressively feeding within two-rod lengths of you making
for entertaining and exciting fishing.
Night Fishing
A great opportunity to catch the big fish is
to target them at night when the biggest fish come out to feed.
Ian & Andrew have caught most of their double figure trout at
night which includes Ian's 19lb brown!
There can also be an evening rise in the early
summer & summer periods for the fisherman that enjoys some dry
fly fishing.
Heli-fishing
For the angler that wants a real adventure to
the most remote rivers, a helicopter flight is the way to go. These
rivers hold good numbers both rainbows & brown trout, with fish
over 7lb not uncommon. There are huts by the rivers, so it is possible
to stay overnight.
Hunting
There are wild Red, Sika & Fellow deer in
our Central Plateau & Lake Taupo area with no deer fences in
sight. A guide with over 30 years experience can take you into the
best areas to find a trophy head (the roar for deer hunting is from
April- May). Hunting for rabbits, opossums, goats & pigs can
also be arranged. |
