Nestled under the foothills of the Southern Alps in a quiet rural setting near La Fontaine Stream, Wapiti Park Homestead is an intimate, three suite boutique country lodge.

A full guiding service is offered for fly-fishing, spin/threadline, freshwater and deep-sea boat fishing, and surfcasting off rugged local beaches.

Location

Wapiti Park Homestead is marked on the:

It is located on the southern boundary of the small rural township of Hari Hari and is positioned on the western side of SH6.

Setting

Set amidst award winning gardens, the colonial style homestead overlooks its own deer farm, which specialises in breeding Rocky Mountain Elk (Wapiti).

Accommodation options

Wapiti Park Homestead offers a variety of accommodation options:

  • Three spacious bedroom suites all tastefully and individually decorated, reflecting their names: Rose, Oak and Fern
  • Dinner, bed and breakfast (recommended); or bed and breakfast
  • Rooms with either ensuite bathrooms or private bathrooms (across the hall from rooms)
  • Bathrooms all have twin basin vanities, heated tile floors, baths, a heated towel rail, demist mirror, a range of toiletries, hair dryer, and bathrobes
  • The Rose and Oak suite each have a two person hydrotherapy spa bath
  • Stunnning views from each suite
Amenities

The following amenities and activities are available to all guests:

  • Five course dinners available, including complimentary pre-dinner drinks and nibbles
  • Farm tours, including feeding the Wapiti deer (elk)

Guided fishing options

La Fontaine Safaris offers guiding for a range of fishing and hunting trips.

Fishing Trips

Fising trips include:

  • Brown and rainbow trout fly-fishing in small spring-fed streams, mountain rivers, and pristine lakes
  • Salmon fishing all year round in local lakes, and during the seasonal run in the rivers
  • Night fly fishing
  • Heli-fishing trips
  • Deep-sea fishing in South Westland

Guided Fishing Package

La Fontaine Safaris and Wapiti Park also offer a guided fishing package, which includes:

  • Two nights accommodation in a double or twin room
  • Dinner and breakfast
  • One day guided trout fishing
  • Licence fees
  • Equipment hire
  • Tuition, if required

Equipment

A full equipment hire service is available, as are flies and lures suitable for the region.

Anglers bringing their own equipment are advised to bring:

  • 5-6wt quality graphite rod
  • 5-6wt quality floating and sink tip lines
  • Selection of Royal Wulff, Adams, and Pheasant Tail (Mayfly) drys; and Pheasant Tail , Pheasant & Copper, Hare and Copper, and caddis pattern nymphs
  • Quality felt sole boots
  • Stocking foot waders
  • Suitable light clothing, a warm jacket and quality rainwear
About your guide Grant has had a life-long interest in wildlife and in the Wapiti (Rocky Mountain Elk) which he now farms. He also has been hunting and fishing for most of his life and it would be hard to find a person with a better knowledge of Westland's flora and fauna.

  • For a professional guide, add $200 and $150 respectively to the above rates
  • Gear hire: NZ$25
  • Boat fishing: One angler NZ$630; two anglers NZ$450 each
  • Surfcasting: Rates as for boat fishing

Cancellation policy

Cancellations advised:

  • within 30 days of the arrival date incur a 25% forfeit of the total booking price
  • within 7 days of the arrival date incur a 100% forfeit of the total booking price.
