Neil Hirtzel: Trout Scout

A true veteran of New Zealand fly fishing, Neil Hirtzel has represented New Zealand in many international competitions and, in 2008, captained the Commonwealth championships teams.

His wealth of experience as a trout scout is at your service on guided fishing trips out of Auckland. Neil tailors trips to your needs and timeframe - from day trips to overnight or multi-day trips.

One great option is to fish the Waikato spring creeks as you travel south to the Taupo or Rotorua fisheries.

Congratulations

We wish to congratulate Neil Hirtzel on coming 2nd and receiving the silver medal in the 2010 Commonwealth Fishing Championships held in Wales. A great effort from a great angler.

Fishing options

Fishing options include:

  • Day trips from Auckland
  • Small stream fishing
  • Sight fishing to large backcountry fish
  • Fly fishing on lakes in a boat
Multi-day trips

Neil operates from Auckland and is happy to develop a "Best of the North" trip to meet your expectations. This can involve any combination of the following options

  • Fishing the spring creeks and rivers around Tirau
  • Fishing the large central North Island backcountry rivers such as the Whanganui, Whakapapa and Tongariro.
  • Fishing the central plateau lakes such as Lakes Taupo, Rotoaira or Otamangakau in Neil's boat for trophy sized fish
  • Targeting the large fish in the lakes and small streams around Rotorua
  • Targeting the large fish in small streams such as the Ngongotaha.

Talk to Neil and he will design a trip especially for you. It will need to be a multi-day trip as it covers a lot of territory though the distance between waters is not great leaving a maximum amount of time for fishing. Remeber the more time you have the more Neil can show you as he will be able to take you round the venues for the 28th World Fly Fishing competiton.
