Instructors

Rod & Reel instructors are current or past members of the New Zealand Fly Fishing Team which competes in Oceania, Commonwealth and World Championships.

  • Peter Scott has represented New Zealand in fly fishing championships since 1998, including three world championships. He is also an Umpqua qualified fly tying instructor.
  • Kiyoshi Nakagawa (Yoshi) is a member of the NZ fly fishing team and represented Japan at the World Championship in Slovakia 2004. He is an official fly tyer for the New Zealand national team and an Umpqua qualified fly tying instructor.
Guiding Rod & Reel offers guided fishing trips on Auckland/Waikato region rivers including the Whanganui, Whakapapa, Waihou and the Ohinemuri.
Fishing tuition

The skilled Rod & Reel instructors teach you the art of fly fishing using easy to understand and relaxed teaching methods that are are suitable for anglers of all levels, from beginners to the more experienced.

Rod and Reel's expert teachers and guides provide world class fly fishing programs in New Zealand that encompass:

Fly casting lessons

Let Rod & Reel's skilled casting instructors (most are current or past NZ Fly Fishing Team members) teach you the art of fly casting. Rod & Reel recommend 1-3 lessons.

Content

Learn fly casting techniques including:

- How to shoot line
- How to double haul
- How to mend
- Roll casting

Venue

The lessons will be held in various parks in the Central Auckland area.

Cost

Beginners lessons: $90 per 1 ½ hours
Follow-up lessons: $60 per hour.

Equipment

All necessary equipment will be supplied (unless you prefer to learn how to cast with your own gear).

Fly fishing lessons
  • Practical fly fishing lessons are available one on one, or in group sessions
  • Lessons are customised to meet your requirements or skill levels
  • After 1-2 lessons you should be able to catch fish wherever you go: the rest of your development is up to you. It is all about practise: the more you practise, the better you will get and the more fish you will catch

Venue

Fly fishing lessons depart from Auckland and entail six hours on the river learning all the techniques on the water..

Equipment

Rod & Reel can supply top class fishing gear and arrange a fishign licence, or you can bring your own gear and licence.

With your own gear and your own fishing licence:

  • $350 for 1 person
  • $450 for 2 persons

With top class gear and fishing licence supplied by Rod & Reel:

  • $450 for 1 person
  • $550 for 2 persons
Fly tying clinics

Learn how to tie your own flies, learn how the flies actually behave in the water, and how to chose the right fly for the conditions.

Levels

Classes are available for

- Beginner fly tiers

- Intermediate

- Advanced

Beginners Classes

Always wanted to try fly tying, now’s the time to give it a go. No experience is necessary. Learn how to tie Pheasant Tails, Rabbit flies, Hare & Copper, Elk Hair Caddis, Glow Bugs, and Tom Jones etc.

Classes are a full 2 hours and have 2 instructors to 4 -6 students (Classes may be made up if you miss a night)

Dates and times

Four 2-hour evening sessions in Central Auckland each week for four weeks, 6.30 to 8.30pm

Clinic 1: April 22nd, 24th, 29th and 1st May 2008
Clinic 2: May 6th, 8th, 13th and 15th 2008

Equipment

All equipment and materials will be supplied. Bring your own fly tying vise if you wish.

Cost

Only $175.00 for the 4 classes.
