Fishing waters

HuntFish guides cover a wide area of trout and salmon waters in from Marlborough to Canterbury and the Central South Island. These include:

Canterbury and the Central South Island:

- the Ashburton lakes including Lake Heron

- Rangitata and Opihi Rivers
- the Waitaki hydro canals
- Lake Benmore and Lake Aviemore

- Lake Tekapo and Lake Pukaki

Marlborough:

- Wairau River

- Waihopai River

- The Branch and Leatham
- Clarence River

Transport

Fishing tours typically start and return to Christchurch, Picton or Wellington where HuntFish will meet you and provide 4WD transport. Tours can extend into a sightseeing tour of the South Island

Heli fishing is available for those wanting to access areas rarely visited

Guiding services
  • HuntFish specialises in small groups with a maximum group size of four people (with a second guide).
  • All flyfishing bookings are exclusive with no overlaps.
  • A number of locations may be visited to best experience the range of fishing available.
  • Non fishers are welcome and tuition is provided.
  • Itineraries are designed to include plans and activities for non fishers as required
Fishing options

Choose from a range of HuntFish fishing packages. Just let Tony know how much time you have and he’ll work out an itinerary to suit:

  • Half-day to unlimited duration
  • Lake and river for rainbow and brown trout
  • Salmon (running late January to the end of March) and staying at the Canterbury lodge
  • Heli-fishing (accessing remote areas rarely fished)
  • Winter fishing
  • Fishing from a boat in the scenic Marlborough Sounds with over night stay in the sounds.
  • Fishing safari incorporating some or all of the above

  • The ultimate guided fishing safari fishing favorite locations all the way down from Marlborough through to the lodge at the lakes in mid Canterbury

Tailor-made packages

  • Packages are priced individually: please enquire for a quote
  • Included in all quotes are daily rates, lodgings B&B, field preparation, transfers from airport and return to airport
  • Not included is personal expenditure, selected recreational activities, helicopter hire, expediting costs and taxidermy

Full-day guiding

  • From around 6am through to 9 or 9.30pm
  • Includes morning and afternoon tea with home baking and lunch with a beer or wine.
  • $750 + GST for one person
  • $900 + GST for two people

Half day guiding

  • Spend either the morning or the afternoon/evening fishing
    - Morning: From around 6am to midday
    - Afternoon: From around 3pm to 9 or 9.30pm
  • Includes morning tea or afternoon tea
  • $500 + GST for one person
  • $600 + GST for two people
  • All gear needed is included at no extra cost

Helicopter rates

  • Helicopter rates with Tekapo Helicopters start from $NZ1250 per hour
Bookings
  • Prior bookings are essential.
  • 50% deposit of the package is required to confirm your dates.
  • VISA and MasterCard accepted
Cancellations
  • Any booking you cancel within 90 days of the fishing trip incurs loss of deposit.
  • HuntFish cancels trips only under serious weather conditions. Should a rescheduled date not be available your deposit is refunded.

 

This 15lb salmon was caught on a 5wt fly rod 5x line and nymph. It was landed after 2.5 hours.
