Chappie Chapman's Flyfishing Adventures

Chappie Chapman is one of New Zealand's most experienced and well-known fishing guides. He provides casting tuition and runs two-day fly fishing courses for anglers at introductory and advanced levels at regular intervals throughout the year.

Chappie is a qualified fly-casting instructor who can teach you in hours what would otherwise take years to learn on your own.

Casting tuition
  • Learn to cast properly from the start
  • Iron out old habits and co-ordination problems
  • Become a confident and competent fly-caster
  • Two hours minimum recommended
  • Tuition is with Chappie at a local pond
  • Use the quality Sage rods provided or use your own if you prefer
  • Group and individual fly casting tuition available
  • Chappie is happy to work through an interpreter
Flyfishing  introduction course

The flyfishing introduction course suits those wishing to start fly fishing, through to anglers of some years experience who want to improve their basic skills.

About the course

  • Two full days from 9am to 5pm
  • Limited to a maximum of twelve students
  • Runs around 25 times a year
  • Approximately 8 hours indoors in a lecture/discussion group
  • Approximately 6 hours outdoors on the water fly casting
  • Morning and afternoon teas and a light lunch are provided.
  • Top of the range Sage rods can be provided, although you may use your own if you prefer.
  • You will need to bring clothing, and footwear for outdoors, pen and notepaper

  • Modern casting techniques:
    - roll cast
    - pick up and put down cast
    - false casting

    - shooting line
    - line control

    - hooking and controlling fish

  • Equipment:

    - How to select a good fly rod

    - Selecting a reel
    - Selecting the right fly-line and what to look for
    - Accessories and other equipment
  • Knots
  • Reading the water, in streams, rivers and lakes
  • River and lake fishing
  • Nymph and dry-fly fishing
  • Indicator fishing
  • Correct tapered leader construction
  • Entomology: what trout eat, and what flies to use
Advanced fly fishing course

The advanced fly fishing course is suitable for more expereicned anglers wishing to improve their skills.

About the course

  • Two days in duration
  • Limited student numbers
  • Two instructors
  • Runs five or six times a year
  • One full day of advanced fly-casting tuition
  • Half a day practicing the presentations on a local stream.
  • Half a day fly-tying clinic under the instruction of professional fly-tyer, Reg McLintock from Mainstream Flies.
  • Morning and afternoon teas are provided.
  • Top of the range Sage rods can be provided, although you may use your own if you prefer.
  • You will need to bring your own lunch, clothing, and footwear for outdoors, pen and notepaper

  • Other techniques for distance casting

  • Fly-tying

  • Very knowledgeable about equipment, having spent a good number of years in the fishing tackle industry, in both wholesale and retail.

Casting tuition

Casting tuition: NZ $50 an hour
(with a minimum charge of NZ $100 for 2 hours or less)

Fly fishing courses (2 days)

Introductory course: NZ $280

Advanced course: NZ $250

Guiding

One angler: NZ$650.00 (excluding GST) per day
Two anglers: NZ$700.00 (excluding GST per day

(includes 4WD transport, sumptuous lunch, snacks and drinks)

Accommodation and transfers

Accommodation, transport and transfers can be arranged.
