Hatch Fishing New Zealand

Craig Smith has fly-fished the South Island for 30 years, and specialises in sight fishing backcountry rivers of the lower South Island and South Westland area. He personally guides all his clients, as well as designing and tying many of the flies used to fish for the beautiful wild brown and rainbow trout theses areas have to offer. He has a real passion for the fisheries, and promotes catch and release, with minimal handling of the trout – just enough for a great photo.

About Hatch Fishing

Craig Smith has fly-fished the South Island for 30 years, and has been featured in numerous fly-fishing magazine articles from NZ, Australia, Sth Africa and the UK. Craig specialises in sight fishing backcountry rivers of the lower South Island and South Westland area. He personally guides all his clients, as well as designing and tying many of the flies used to fish for the beautiful wild brown and rainbow trout theses areas have to offer. He has a real passion for the fisheries, and promotes catch and release, with minimal handling of the trout – just enough for a great photo.
Based in the Southern Lakes, Craig also has a fishing shack on the banks of the Turnbull river near Haast that is used a base when fishing Sth Westland.
If the weather is bad, there are plenty of fallback options - it is extremely rare that we cannot go fishing. In fact, one of these “B” options turned up a 10lb trophy brown on the dry fly earlier this year!
Craig works in with a network of other quality professional guides, and if he can't guide you due to other bookings, he will make every effort to introduce you to another guide that will give you a memorable experience.
