A veteran West Coast brown trout fly fisherman and a member of the NZPFGA, Brian Hoy is well known and respected around the world for his angling experience, guiding skill, and knowledge of the best spots to suit conditions on any given day.

Fishing waters West Coast and Lake Brunner district rivers, streams, spring creeks and lake dry fly and nymph fishing (catch and release only). Usually sight fishing but this is dependent on conditions.
Guiding services

Brian Hoy's guiding services include:

  • Fishing trips matched to each angler's specific interests, abilities, health or disability, age, experience and fitness levels
  • 4WD Mitsubishi Chariot road transport
  • Lake fishing by boat
  • Fishing equipment is supplied plus advice on equipment to bring
  • Rods set-up and flies/leaders/tippets tied
  • Enjoys teaching and guiding novices of any age
  • Complimentary local transfer to Hokitika airport or Greymouth railway station; other transfers provided with the cost according to distance
  • If you are traveling on, Brian is happy to fish part of the way with you, and also to meet and handover to another guide
  • Accommodation bookings arranged to suit
Fishing options

Variable "best days" option

  • Entails booking a designated number of days fishing with one or more added rest days, e.g. book 4 days and fish any 3, or book 7 days and fish any 5 (applies to bookings of 4 or more days).
  • Designed to allow for wet weather, tiredness and other activities
  • An excellent option for anglers traveling with non-fishing companions who would welcome combining fishing with some sightseeing, hiking or simply relaxing.
  • Enables couples or friends traveling together to take turns being guided fishing on different days with a day or two for other pursuits.
  • No charge for the days not fished as long as you specify this option when you book. You can decide to fish the extra day(s) later if you wish.

Part day option

  • Designed for clients who have never fished before, those who have limited time, or those who find a full day too tiring.
  • Best suited to lake fishing
  • Finishes early afternoon, in time to catch the Alpine Express to Christchurch from Moana (Lake Brunner)
About your guide

Your guide Brian Hoy:

  • Has been fishing the West Coast for over 60 years
  • Is a member of the New Zealand Professional Fishing Guides Association (NZPFGA)
  • Has excellent knowledge of the region's fishing waters and conditions
  • Caters for all levels and ages of anglers from novices to the most experienced angler
What to bring
  • Your are welcome to bring your own rod and tackle. Four piece rods which can travel as hand luggage are recommended to avoid rods going missing in transit. Clients are welcome to try their own flies.
  • Boots and light weight breathable waders. (Size 8 men's and size 6 ladies hip waders are available.)
  • Wet weather and cold weather gear: a good lightweight raincoat, gloves,and warm clothing which can be taken off in layers (but not blue in colour as it attracts bumble bees)
  • Polypropylene dark coloured underwear which can be worn with shorts and wading boots in warm weather
  • Polaroid sun glasses: light grey polaroids are best
  • A hat with a brim to protect ears and neck from sunburn
  • Sunscreen/insect repellant (can be bought combined)

  • Guiding fees for one or two anglers
  • Transport
  • Quality fishing equipment

Fees exclude:

  • Fishing licenses
  • Lunch (lunch may be provided by your accommodation provider or bought on the way to the fishing)
  • Helicopter charters
  • Guide’s accommodation and meals for out of area fishing

In season (Oct-April)
