Fishing options

Green Trout Guiding's fishing trips range from a single day to 5 day trips with raft or helicopter and overnight tent camping. Itineraries can be customised to meet each angler's interests.

On foot guiding

  • The most common form of guiding where angler(s) and guide walk a section of a particular river hunting for trout
  • Generally not much more than 4 kilometers is walked up stream and then back to the vehicle
  • The distance is determined by the amount of fish and/or the fitness of the angler
  • Lunch and vehicle supplied

Raft guiding

  • Angler(s) are rowed down a section of the Rangitikei River, moving from pool to pool again searching for trout
  • Raft guiding removes the issue of walking all day
  • Jim Rainey does the rafting and is a qualified grade 3 river guide
  • River safety is foremost - the raft trip is merely a mode of transport from pool to pool rather than a "thrill seeking" day
  • Lunch and vehicle supplied

Helicopter fly outs

  • Although relatively expensive, helicopter fly outs enable the angler to get into water not normally frequented by other people
  • The chances of getting amongst more undisturbed fish are greatly increased

Camping for multi day fishing trips

  • Anglers can go into remote areas and fishing waters for up to five days
  • Camping locations can be accessed by foot, raft or helicopter
  • Camping out in tents adds another dimension to the angling experience
About your guide

Your guides, Jim and Russell:

  • Have many years guiding experience: Jim has guided for over 12 years and is a member of the NZPFGA while Russell has guided for over six years
  • Are both experienced fishermen and have combined experience of nearly half a century on the local rivers
  • Are happy to guide for all levels of anglers from those with little or no experience, up to competent anglers
  • Can offer tuition in flytying: Russell is an expert fly tier and designer, one of the youngest royalty fly tiers/designers for Feather Merchants Pro Team
  • Both have current first aid certificates
  • Jim is a qualified grade 3 river guide who employs a safety first policy and has over ten years rafting experience
Accommodation

Green Trout Guiding can arrange local accommodation to suit your needs. Jim particularly recommends Mairenui Rural Retreat which is nestled on a scenic hill country farm bordering a private stretch of the Rangitikei River.

At Mairenui, you can relax with dinner, bed and breakfast in the homestead; or stay in the restored villa, or the architecturally designed private retreat.
