Hine Rae Historic Reserve

Drive through the gate into the reserve parking area 8km from Opotoki. A walking track leads to the Waioeka River.

Wide river bed with large shingle islands suiting spin fishing.

Culvert 41

Drive to off the road parking area by culvert 41, where a track leads to the river.

Suits spin fishing.

Aro Aro Bridge

A track starts upstream of the bridge at the parking area.

Suits spin fishing.

Pines

Park in the layby at the Fish & Game access sign. Step over the low fence and walk to the river.

Suits spin fishing.

Rest Area

Look for the rest area sign. You can drive to the river's edge, where there is an attractive family picnic spot.

Old Girl Guides Camp Site

Park in the large grassy area, and walk to the river.

Wide river with shingle bed suiting spin fishing.

4WD Track/Girl Guides Track

A 4WD track leads to the rivers edge. 2WD vehicles should park on the roadside.

Shingle bed, suits spin fishing.

Side Track

A sealed metal vehicle track leads directly to the river.

Some boulders appearing for spinning and fly fishing.

Owhiritoa Stream

Park on the roadside near the Mangapumarumaru Stream confluence, and take the track to river.

Faster water with boulders featuring. Suits nymphing and spin fishing.

Macrocarpa Stand

Upstream of Mangapumarumaru bridge, a track starts through the gate.

Gravel Pit

Upstream of Grahams Bridge, riverside parking provides easy access.

Suits fly or spin fishing.

Tauranga Track

Take the track from the carpark in the DOC reserve to river (5-10 minute walk).

Culvert 98

From the roadside, park at culvert 98, and follow the track to the river.

Flow Gauge/Culvert 104

Walk to the river from the carpark upstream of the river gauging tower.

Off Road Layby

A track to the river leads from an off road parking area close to the middle gorge paddocks.

Kahikatea/Culvert 35

A track to the river leads from a parking layby adjacent to culvert 35.

Waiata Bridge

Cross the bridge and park your vehicle, then access the river from the true left bank (opposite to SH2).

Fisherman's Bend

Near the confluence of the Oponae Stream, a 4WD track leads to the rivers edge.

Nymph or spin.

Culvert 60

Park on the roadside at culvert 60 and take the track to river.

Narrow and deep, swift water suiting heavy nymph.

Culvert 70

Park on the roadside at culvert 70 or in the layby on the downstream corner and take the track to the river.

Culvert 83

Park on the roadside at culvert 83 and follow the track to the river.

Omaukora Stream

Park upstream of the bridge, and take the track downstream of the carpark to the river.

Wairata

Cross the bridge on Wairata Station Road. Crossing Waioeka on Redpaths Road Bridge leads to the upper river. Access is gained through second gate at the discretion of the property owners, the Redpaths, phone 07-315 7763. Please call ahead for permission. As this is private property, make sure you leave all gates as you find them.

Monument/Opato Stream

Steps lead to the stream from a parking layby at the monument to William Brook.

Upstream of Monument

Park in the layby, then walk 100m upstream and take the track to the river.

45km/h Corner

Park on the high bank. A steep track leads behind the bank and down to the river within the gorge area. Suits nymphing.

Lone Matai Tree/ 35km per hour Corner

There is a parking layby downstream of the old Matai tree which is to be found immediately upstream of the corner. A track starts 100m downstream behind the barrier opposite culvert 30. Nymphing water.

Gibsons Bridge

From the carpark upstream of the bridge, a track leads to the confluence with the Manganuku Stream. Deep water suits nymphing, with dry fly in summer.

Manganuku Bridge

Park in the DOC reserve area, then walk to the confluence of Manganuku Stream and Waioeka River.

Koranga River

Turn right into Te Wera Road, 6km from Matawai. Turn into Moanui Valley Road and park at the end of the gravel road.
