The Takaputahi River is a true wilderness river for most of its length. In the upper reaches it flows through a mixture of open farmland and bush before entering heavy bush as it travels to join the Motu River.

The water is generally clear though does carry some colour meaning that most fishing is done blind. Care should be taken on this river particularly if there is rain as there can rise quickly.

This river should only be attempted by that energetic anglers who are prepared to spend some time walking and camping out. T

The upper reaches can be reached by turning off State Highway 35 at the small settlement of Toatoa.

The more interesting middle and lower reaches below the confluence with the Motu River can only be reached by serious walking (or maybe by helicopter).

Nymphs: Dark weighted nymph patterns in sizes 12 to 14 such as Hare and Copper, Pheasant Tail, Prince Nymph and Halfback all work well.

Dry flies: During the summer size 12 to 16 flies fished over the faster water can be very effective. Dry Royal Wulff, Parachute Adams, Humpy and cicada patterns during the summer all work well especially when teamed with a nymph.

Wet flies: Small wet flies such as Invicta, March Brown, Greenwell's Glory, Grouse, and Claret and Mallard work well particularly in the evening when fish are taking emerger patterns just subsurface. When fishing deeper try Hamill's Killer, Mrs Simpson or Red Setter.

Spinners: Many spinners work well though smaller lures and gold colours tend to be best.
