Wairau River Access Points

This table details Fish & Game access points to the Wairau River as shown on the Lower Wairau and Upper Wairau River access maps.

1 Wairau Bar

Vehicle access to the northern side of the Wairau River mouth.

Wairau Diversion Bridge

Northern side driving access below the bridge, walking access above southern side, walking access above southern side, walking access above and below the bridge.

Bothams Bend North Bank

Access from Thomas's Road. Drive over the stop bank and park out of the way. This is the start of the diversion.

Bothams Bend Road - South Bank ("Morrans Hollow")

Access off start of Clayton's Road. Turn left at end of road onto the stop bank. Driving access upstream, foot access downstream of the diversion.

Ferry Bridge North Bank

Park on the downstream side of the bridge.

Walking access upstream to the diversion.

Stop Bank Road South Bank

Drive along the stop bank road to the Marlborough District Council Reserve.

Access tracks to the mouth of the Spring Creek.

Wairau Bridge SH1

Driving access above and below bridge on the South Bank.

Gravel Pit Access

Off the Tuamarina / Kaituna Road.

Vehicle access over the flood bank to the river.

Vehicle access off SH6 by the saw mill.

Walk over flood bank.

Vehicle access available at Pauls and Boyces Road ends.

Vehicle access on rough track downstream side.

Salmon Farm

Drive through main gates, turn left on gravel track.

Park by river bank.

Please stay clear of quarantine farm area and don't use ford after recent rain.

Vehicle access to flood bank.

Walk over bank to river.

Park 100m on past Onamalutu Road.

Walk over a steep track to the river.

Waihopai River Bridge

Walking access on east bank of Waihopai River via Condors Forest Road.

Park near gate.

Vehicle access pathway, then 20 minute walk to Wairau River on Waihopai West bank.

Park in the river bed.

Rainbow Station Hay Shed SH63

No vehicle access.

Park away from gate, and follow signs across paddock to the stile and track to river.

Rainbow Valley Ski Area Turnoff

Public road to Six Mile Creek and Ski Area turnoff.

Good access via the many creeks flowing into the Wairau River.

Six Mile Creek

To gain vehicle access beyond Six Mile Creek gate, contact Rainbow Station owners Alison and Philip Graham, ph (03) 521 1838. From December to the end of February, the road is open to the public with a manned gate above Six Mile Creek and a charge of $20 per vehicle. The road is closed during the first weel of January for cattle mustering.

Hamner Springs Hydro Road

Permission to drive the private Hamner Springs Hydro road can be obtained from the Department of Conservation at St Arnauds (phone 03 521 1806) or DOC at Hamner (on 03 4157128). Do not attempt this road unless you have a four wheel drive vehicle.
