Glenroy River Trout Fishing

The Glenroy River is a scenic backcountry river providing many kilometers of water.

Situation The Glenroy rises in the Spenser Mountains and flows north through a valley to join the Matakitaki approximately 30kms from Murchison.

Description A swift river that flows over stone and gravel. It has a range of water types from the long riffles to deep pools punctuated by fast flowing rapids. This small back country river that offers a challenge and good sport to the more competent and energetic angler.
Fish numbers and size There are moderate fish numbers but fish tend to be large with most in the 3 - 4lb range.
Access

A small road follows the river for the first 8 kms. A walking track then follows the river to its headwaters where there is a DOC hut.

Recommended lures

Nymphs: Any Pheasant Tail variant or Hare and Copper (14 or 16 sizes) work well with smaller sizes (even 18) in the headwaters).

Dry flies: Greenwell's Glory, Coch-y-bondhu, Adams, Kakahi Queen, Beetle patterns (in early summer) and cicada patterns (from mid summer) during the day and Twilight Beauty and Dad's Favourite for the evening rise. Fish will often be seen rising during the day in the middle and lower reaches.

Wet flies: Greenwell's Glory, Grouse and Purple, and Red Tipped Governor fished sub-surface work well, especially in the evening. Larger patterns fished in the deeper pools such as Hamill's Killer and Mrs Simpson can also be effective.

Spinners: Small bladed spinners such as Mepps or Veltic fished into the pools or upstream into faster water work best.
