North Canterbury Fish & Game are calling
on volunteers to help fin clip approximately 10,000 rainbow trout
yearlings at the Montrose Hatchery. This is a great opportunity
to bring the kids up to have a look around the hatchery. Currently
we have in excess of 150,000 salmon fry and 40,000 rainbow fry for
next years release as well as the trout to be released this year.
We are planning on fin clipping on Sunday the
11th of November 2007. Could those anglers that are keen to help
please phone North Canterbury Fish & Game so we can organise
food for the BBQ lunch we will provide. Volunteers can meet at the
Yaldhurst Pub at 8am that day to organise transportation or meet
at Montrose at 9:15am. Waders are not required and gumboots or waterproof
footwear are ideal. Please also bring suitable wet weather clothing.
The rainbow trout we will be clipping were donated
to us as ova in September last year by the Fish & Game Otago
run hatchery at the McCray’s Flat Gold Mine in Central Otago.
These trout now average around 80 grams and are due to be released
into the high country lakes listed below before Christmas. The process
of fin clipping is relatively easy. Between 30 people clip at any
time with as many extras on standby to relieve tired and cold hands.
This makes relatively easy work of an otherwise lengthy task. Roughly
60 - 80 trout are placed in a fish bin containing an anesthetising
agent where they are temporarily knocked out for a few minutes so
volunteers can fin clip them using curved surgical eye scissors.
They are then placed back into the raceway where they immediately
recover in the fresh water
Let’s hope that we get good catches of
these released trout in future years.
Hope to see you at Montrose. Thanks for your support.
