Children's Fishing Pond / Tongariro National Trout Centre

On specified days, children are taught to cast a flyrod and catch a trout at  the Children's Fishing Pond in Turangi, by volunteers of the Tongariro National Trout Centre Society. The fish is weighed and measured and a certificate is issued.

The Tongariro National Trout Centre is situated 4 kilometers south of the township of Turangi, on at the southern end of Lake Taupo. Parking space is adjacent to State Highway 1.

The dates for the fishing days in 2010 are.

Sunday 17 January 2010

Saturday 3 April (Easter & School Holidays) subject to the pond being available.

Sunday 6 June (Queens Birthday Weekend)

Sunday 11 July (School holidays)

Sunday 3 October (School holidays)

Sunday 24 October (Labour Weekend)

Times

Then children's pond is open from 9.30am to 3.00pm on the dates above.

Tuition is conducted in 1-hour sessions and bookings are generally restricted to 30 children per hour. You will be given a start time when you make a booking. Please arrive on time.

Advanced tuition

Advanced fly-casting tuition sessions for adults and children can also be booked.

  • Session start times are 11am and 1pm
  • Sessions are about an hour in length
  • Suggested age is 8 years and over
  • The limit is 6 children per session
  • Booking prior to the day is essential
Your catch

Each child is allowed one fish per day.

You can have your fish filleted, smoked and wrapped in foil ready to take home for a small donation.

No other fish cleaning facilties are available and other fish must be taken away whole from the premises. Plastic bags can be purchased on the day for 50 cents.

Fishing gear Complete sets of fishing gear are provided. No private or personal gear may be used in the pond to avoid the possibility of introducing disease.
Cost

Standard tuition: A charge of $6.00 is payable per child. This covers a 24-hours child fishing licence and a $1.50 administration fee. If the child has a valid Taupo Fishery Fishing Licence (which must be brought with the child), the charge is reduced to $1.50.

Advanced fly-casting tuition:
$10 per child
$15 per adult

Plastic fish bags: 50 cents each

Donations: Donations to assist fund the work of the Tongariro National Trout Centre and its volunteers are always appreciated.

Payment: No EFTPOS or VISA facilities are available so please bring cash for all payments.

  • All day sausage sizzle plus hot and cold drinks sold. Costs are from $2 an item.

  • River Walk visitor centre.
  • Stroll and/or picnic beside the Tongariro River
