Waikanae River Trout Fishing

Despite its short course, the Waikane offers a diverse range of fishing opportunities. It is a beautiful river that is easy to fish.

Fish type, number and size	Brown trout including a few big sea run trout. Floods can affect fish stocks causing trout numbers to vary from year to year.
Situation	A short river that runs west from the bush clad hills of the Tararua Ranges to the coast near Waikanae on the Kapiti Coast.

Description	The upper river is beautiful with stable pools but holds relatively few trout. The river wanders through patches of native rewarewa and tawa. The middle and lower reaches are very pleasant and hold moderate numbers of good fish with a few big sea run specimens. Early in the season the best fishing is above the railway bridge and below Reikorangi. In summer when the water level falls, the most productive water is between Otaihanga and the water treament weir.
