Description The Little Grey is a tea-coloured stream that flows over a stone and rock bed. This small river provides many kilometres of accessible fly and spin fishing. The river can get low in the late summer if it has been very dry and wind coming down the valley can make fishing difficult at times. This is an excellent dry fly and nymphing waters though spin fishing can be productive early in the season and in the reaches before the river joins the Grey. It is easily wadeable.
Fish numbers and size Good numbers of fish with most being in the 2 - 3lb range
Ease of fishing An easy river to fish.
Access Access to the lower half of the river is via State Highway 7 running between Reefton and Greymouth and the upper reaches are accessed via Miamai Rd.
Recommended lures

Nymphs: Small nymphs such as Hare and Copper, Pheasant Tails and Caddis imitations all work well in sizes 14 or smaller.

Dry flies: Small flies such as Royal Wulff, Hardies Favourite, Dad's Favourite and March Brown all work well at all times of the day. Fish bushier flies such as Coch-y-Bondhu and Humpy over the faster water.

Wet flies: Small wets like Greenwell's Glory, March Brown and sedge emerger patterns work well when fished sub-surface. These flies are particularly effective when fishing the evening rise.

Spinners: Small bladed spinners (Mepps or Veltic) fished upstream into the faster water or through the deep pools are best for this small river.
