Fat Albert Smokehouse / Allandale Lodge

 

Fat Albert Smokehouse produces a selection of fine quality smoked products using old Scottish methods and recipes. A choice of wonderful gourmet food can be ordered online including smoked salmon, chicken, duck and venison.

The smokehouse owners also operate heritage bed and breakfast, Allandale Lodge which, along with the smokehouse, is nestled on 5 acres of Mackenzie country farmland near Lake Opuha.

Location

Allandale Lodge and the Fat Albert Smokehouse are marked on the Opihi/Opuha River map.

The property is 5km north of Fairlie on SH79. It is 2 hours south of Christchurch, 3.5 hours north of Dunedin, 3.5 hours north of Queenstown and 1.5 hours to Mount Cook.

Smoked goods
  • Products are available from the Smokehouse, by mail order, or online ordering
  • All products are vacuum packed and ready for consumption on purchase
  • Ideal in salads, platters, canapés or simply reheat to make scrumptious warm dishes
  • To further enhance flavour, take the product out of the fridge, open the pack and let it breath for 20-30 minutes before consuming
  • Fat Albert Smokehouse strives to be chemical free
  • Look out for the distinctive van at local markets and fairs

 

Product range

The Fat Albert Smokehouse uses locally harvested products are used where possible. The craft smoker uses Scottish methods and recipes dating back hundreds of years. Products are moist with a hint of natural oak smoke that enhances their natural flavour.

  • Cold Smoked Salmon
    Cured to give a mellow and distinctive taste then cold smoked with natural oak. It is then hand sliced and packed back on its skin which continues to enhance its flavour.
  • Roasted Smoked Salmon
    Cured in a brine then dried before hot smoking with natural oak makes this cooked and ready to eat warm or cold. A wonderful salad ingredient either in chunks or flaked.
  • Gravadlax
    Salmon cured with dill and mustard. It is then hand sliced. A Scandinavian delicacy.
  • Smoked Duck Breast
    Cured with an orange liqueur. We recommend the breast to be sliced thinly. Ready to eat warm or cold.
  • Smoked Chicken Breast
    A wonderful starter or buffet addition. Cooked and ready to eat.
  • Smoked Venison
    A delicate taste of Mackenzie country fare. It is sliced and ready to be eaten.
  • Other
    Other delicious smoked goods such as smoked chorizo sausage are often available - please enquire.
