Bottom of the North Island Fishing Itinerary

Rangitikei River

This 7-day itinerary, which begins and ends in Wellington, takes you to some great fishing rivers in the following regions:

- Wellington/Wairarapa

- Hawke's Bay

Day 1

Wellington-Masterton

From Wellington, head north on SH 2 through the Hutt Valley (and past the wonderful Hutt River), over the Rimutaka Hills to Masterton (about 2 hours drive). These hills are steep and winding so take care. Around the small township of Masterton there is access to a number of small rivers though the best fishing is to be had on the Ruamahanga River which flows close to the town.

Day 2

Masterton-Mangatainoka

Continue north on SH 2 until the settlement of Mangatainoka, the home of iconic Tui Brewery (about 1 hours driving time). Mangatainoka gives access to a range of rivers and in particular to some of the best fishing on the Manawatu River. If time permits however, do spend some time on the Mangatainoka River itself and if feeling very adventurous, travel inland to some of the smaller streams that flow from the Tararua Ranges.

Day 3

Mangatainoka-Waipukarau

Continue north on SH 2 past Woodville and on to the township of Waipukurau (about 1.5 hours driving). Waipukurau is a great centre to explore the wonderful Tukituki River and its largest tributary the Waipawa. These prolific waters provide many miles of fishing for a good population of hard fighting rainbow trout. The Tukituki was also the venue of the 2008 Commonwealth Fly Fishing Competition.

Day 4

Waipukarau-Waiohiki

Travel north on SH 2 until reaching the settlement of Waiohiki and then turn of onto SH 50 which will take you past much of the Ngaruroro River. Anywhere along this river provides excellent fishing but it is recommended that anglers try and fish the middle reaches (or if time permits to try the upper reaches and headwaters). This river provides well over 100 kms of easily accessed water and fishing of the highest quality

Day 5

Hawke's Bay area

Stay in this area of the Hawke's Bay and fish some of the other rivers such as the Tutaekuri or Mohaka, all of which are a short drive away.

Day 6

Napier-Mangaweka via Taupo

Travel to the city of Napier and then take SH 2 north until the junction with SH 5. Take SH 5 to Taupo and then take SH 1 south. Travel to the small settlement of Mangaweka which gives good access to the trophy trout water of the Rangitikei River.

Day 7

Mangaweka-Wellington

Return to Wellington along SH 1. Stop and fish the Hutt River if you have time and to spare.
