About Us

The concept of nzfishing.com as a one-stop online resource for planning a New Zealand freshwater fishing trip came about when Doug was researching a visit to British Columbia. The information he needed was mostly there on the internet but scattered and hard to find.

Doug realised that visitors to New Zealand as well as New Zealand anglers fishing different parts of the country needed a single comprehensive guide to New Zealand fly fishing. The feedback from visitors demonstrates how true this was.

nzfishing.com has grown and developed to be the leading New Zealand freshwater fishing website, top of relevant Google search results, and attracting thousands of visitors every month.

In 2009, nzfishing.com visitors voted it one of the best New Zealand web sites in the NetGuide People's Choice Web Awards. In addition, nzfishing.com was recognised in the 2008 Writemark Plain English Awards, where designer and editor Bev Stevens was runner-up in the Best Individual category.

Role

Research, writing, sales and marketing

Background

After gaining a Masters degree in geography, Doug Stevens trained as a teacher and then followed a career as a senior manager in the New Zealand polytechnic sector. He now works full-time writing for nzfishing.com about trout fishing opportunities and about environmental issues such as access and water quality that affect angers.

Expertise

Doug has been a passionate fisherman since the age of four when his grandmother took him fishing at the Waiheke Island wharf. Back home he was often to be found with a line dangled hopefully into the water trough on the family farm.

His favourite fishing waters remain the streams of the central North Island where he grew up. Doug has fished extensively around New Zealand, as well as in England, Scotland and France. Mongolia and Patagonia are on his to do list. He was a volunteer controller at the 2008 World Fly Fishing Champs in New Zealand.
