Small Lakes Close for the Winter

DOC press release: 28 May 2007

Taupo District anglers are reminded that the closed season for fishing in Lakes Otamangakau and Kuratau commences on Friday 1 June.

“The closed season is a long standing management measure to provide protection to fish stocks through the period of their annual breeding cycle”, DOC Taupo Fishery Field Operations Manager, Glenn Maclean says. “Lake Otamangakau in particular is renowned internationally as a trophy trout fishery, and these large adult fish can become more venerable to angling pressure as they move upstream though the inlet canals on their way to spawn”.

Both lakes will reopen to fishing on Wednesday, 1 October this year.
