Sports Fishing Regulations: Purpose

The sports fishing regulations are set in law to ensure:

  • That fish populations are maintained and that the number of fish caught do not threaten the sustainability of the fisheries
  • That the quality of the fishing experience is maintained
  • That spawning areas are protected
  • That incompatible methods of fishing are kept separate
  • That anglers use sports-like methods
