Southland Fishing Regulations, 2011 - 2012
The following is our understanding of the regulations that apply to trout and salmon fishing in the Southland region from 1 October 2011 to 30 September 2012. Where general rules do not apply, lakes and rivers are listed in alphabetical order for quick reference.
The information presented here is not meant to be taken as a complete statement of the law. Please refer to the South Island regulations booklet supplied with your fishing licence or view an online version at the Fish & Game New Zealand website.

| All fishing waters | Because of the risk of spreading the invasive alga didymo, anglers must clean their fishing gear, waders and boots, especially when moving between rivers. | Didymo Biosecurity Alert |
All Fiordland National Park rivers and lakes with the following
exceptions. |
A Clean Gear Certificate is required before fishing these waters (within 48 hours) to protect Fiordland rivers from didymo. You must also carry an approved didymo cleaning kit. | DOC

| Murchison Mountains Special Area | No access or fishing is permitted with the exception of the Ettrick Burn which you need a permit for. | DOC information sheet and map |
| Milford Track Rivers Movement Control Area | All wet items are prohibited without prior cleaning for didymo | DOC information sheet and map |
| Large eastern Fiordland lakes and their tributaries | Watercraft operating on large eastern Fiordland lakes are encouraged not to enter tributary rivers, as these lakes are didymo infected. Movement may spread didymo upstream into these pristine rivers. |
