Changes to Taupo Fishery Regulations from 1 October 2008

The following changes to the Taupo Fishery regulations advised by DOC apply from 1 October 2008.

Minimum size for trout

The minimum legal size for trout from Lake Taupo and most tributary rivers is reduced from 45 centimetres to 40 centimetres.

Exclusions

The exclusions are:

  • The Kuratau River upstream from the hydro-electric supply dam where the minimum size remains at 30cm
  • The Waikato River between the control gates bridge at Taupo and the Huka Falls where the minimum size remains at 35cm.
  • There is no minimum size limit on Lake Moawhango or the Waipakihi River above Rangipo Dam.
Downriggers

The 40 metre maximum cable length and weighted line restrictions for downriggers and paravanes are removed. There are now no restrictions on the use of this gear.

Felt-soled footwear

The use of waders or footwear with felt or similar material on the soles is not permitted when fishing for trout.

Minor amendments
  • “Artificial lure is re-defined to make it clear that it is only a lure if it has a hook attached or incorporated.
  • The prohibition on the use of berley, ground bait or chemical attractants is now more explicit. This also prohibits chemically treated or scented lures.
  • Only fly fishing gear (rod, reel, line and fly) may be used in fly fishing-only waters.
