Ahuriri River Lodge is a self catering holiday house that can sleep 8 and is located at the old Birchwood Station at the start of the 49,000 hectare Ahuriri Conservation Park. With an easy walk to the world famous Ahuriri River and a number of other remote and beautiful waters close by, the lodge provides anglers a great base to explore some of New Zealand's greatest trophy fly fishing waters.

The iconic renovated high country homestead opened in late 2013 as a self catered holiday home in a fly fishing region that is truly one of New Zealand's jewels.

Local fishing waters

The lodge is very close to the Ahuriri River and the following waters are all a short distance away.

There are also numerous other small lakes and streams in the area that can be explored with a flyrod.

Setting The Ahuriri River Lodge is at the recently renovated homestead of Birchwood Station, part of the Ahuriri Conservation Park, encompassing some 49 000 hectares. Nestled at the base of the majestic Souuthern Alps in a wide valley of stunning beauty and crystal clear water.
Accommodation features

The Lodge has:

  • Four bedrooms, one with ensuite
  • A comfortable lounge
  • Huge log burner (and all the wood required)
  • Dining room able to seat 10 around a rimu slab table
  • Fully equipped kitchen with double stove, dishwasher, fridge freezer and all other apliances you would expect from a modern kitchen
  • Basic pantry items
  • Two bathrooms
  • Sun room where you can enjoy the stunning views
  • TV
  • Broadband (Charge applies as this is by satellite)
  • Gas water heating
  • Pure spring water (uv treated)

Guiding Carl has fished the area for many years and can take groups of up to 3 out on guided expeditions.

  • Walking in the Ahuriri Canservation Park. From short walks to alpine climbs, there is something for all fitness levels
  • Mountain biking
  • Horse riding
  • Mountain climbing with several summits offering a range of climbs from moderately easy to very technical
  • Hunting for red deer, chamois and thar
  • Enjoying the unique flora and fauna in the region that includes vast areas of tussocklands, wetlands and moraines.
